Essential Oils – Relieve and Comfort Sore Muscles

We all deal with achy muscles or joints related to stress, overuse or increased activity. Often we go to over the counter remedies which can have side effects. Essential oils have many of the same benefits as medications without the side effects.
In this new year, many of us are including physical activity or fitness as one of our goals. Working out can bring new awareness to muscles and joints that we did not notice before. When this happens to me, I reach for my essential oils that have a focus for muscle relaxation and balance. These are some helpful oils and tips to help you choose the best product(s) for you and your family

Wintergreen Oil
Contains methyl salicylate, the same constituent found in aspirin. This oil may provide comfort to sore muscles. You can dilute a few drops in a tsp of carrier oil or as part of a blend. Use for inflamed areas such as muscles and joints. Safety tips – use caution if on blood thinners and keep out of reach of children

Frankincense Oil
Has immune stimulating qualities and has research on reducing inflammation. Consider using this oil for nerve inflammation such as sciatica. You can inhale, dilute and/or massage over an area of concern or follow nerve path for comfort. Safety tip – generally regarded as safe.

Peppermint Oil
Contains menthol which has a cooling effect like an icy hot sensation. I love this for my sore muscles related to tension and stress. You can inhale, diffuse, or dilute in a carrier oil and apply over sore, inflamed muscles and joints. Safety tips – you should avoid this oil near eyes, or with children under 30 months, and with anyone with atrial fibrillation.

Copaiba Oil
This oil contains beta caryophyllene which has been studied for its high anti-inflammatory actions. Consider inhalation or apply over sore, inflamed muscles and joints. Great with adults, children and animals. Safety tip – generally regarded as safe.

Orange Oil
Contains Limonene which has been a support for the immune system. This is a great oil with children. You can inhale, diffuse, dilute as an application with a massage. Safety tip – take care if using on the skin and avoid the sun.
