What’s Stopping You From Making A Change?

Have you ever stopped yourself from doing something you really wanted to do? Do you have any thoughts or beliefs which are getting in the way of making a desired change? Here’s a true story how one of my clients was able to go beyond where he was stopping himself and make the change that would move him forward in his life and work. It only took a moment and a powerful question.

One of my client’s way back when, came to me because he had lost his job and he was questioning whether he should stay in that line of work or not. As we got into the coaching process, he also shared with me that he had promised himself he would start his own business by the time he was 40 and he hadn’t done it yet. You guessed it,,,, he was now past 40 years old.

As a coach, I’m in the business of asking questions. I asked him what kind of actions he had taken to get this new business up and running. As it turned out he had taken a lot of action.

In fact, he had very few actions left to take. I then asked, What’s stopping you from launching this business? His answer was “I can’t decide if I’m supposed to continue in this line of work or if I’m supposed to start this new business?” I then asked, Might it be possible that you could do both?

It caused him to pause for a moment and a small smile appeared.  At that moment he saw he still had a passion for his previous work and that the new business would allow him to tap into his creativity which had been missing for him.

Within a very short amount of time he was back in the same line of work and he launched his new business.  What got him off track was the either or thinking that he could only do one or the other.

It’s normal and natural to question ourselves when we are up to something new and different like starting a new business or even hiring a coach. Certain thoughts can take us off track or even worse, stop us from moving forward. To get back on track you need to observe your thoughts and look to see if they move you forward. If not, then ask yourself, What might be the next action I need to take right now that will move me forward? Then go do it. If you are tired of stopping yourself let’s schedule a time to talk. I’d love to get you back on track. Email me at kris@mycoachingdimensions.com

Let’s make that happen!
