Nia – Gentle Movement for Every Body

Nia is a fusion fitness program blends the beauty of the dance arts, the power and precision of the martial arts along with the balance of the healing arts.  Nia is for every body and is adaptable to many fitness levels.  It can be part of any relaxation and wellness plan for mind-body fitness releasing tension and discomfort while finding ease and peace. In addition, Nia can be extremely beneficial for those dealing with life changing events.

Developed by Debbie Rosas and Carlos AyaRosas, Nia has become an international sensation in the fitness world.  Personally, it meets my exercise needs for variety with a cardiovascular component along with flexibility, grace, and strength training. I love the variety of music that does not allow me to get into entrainment and definitely keeps me engaged  – asking for – what is next!?

I have used Nia fitness for over 15 years with people who are cancer survivors. There can be concerns about moving certain areas of the body affected by surgery or treatment.  Fatigue, emotional issues and even body appearance may hinder a survivor from moving their body.  We were able to continue our Nia practice through online media during the COVID crisis.  This was a wonderful benefit to be able to move in the comfort of one’s own home.

Nia is more than fitness.  It is not about how much you can do or the amount of repetitions.  Nia is about body awareness and sensation – something that can be denied or ignored during treatment or after surgery.  Recently, we completed a research study looking at Nia exercise effects on arm and shoulder range of motion for women with a diagnosis of breast cancer receiving radiation therapy.  It was amazing to see women reconnecting to body areas that had been affected by surgery or treatment like radiation.  It is interesting how we are able to ignore an area of concern or discomfort and “push” through but that is not healing.  Awareness and listening within is so powerful to our healing and Nia can assist in that process.

Nia is about pleasure and not pain. If it hurts, adjust or do not do it! Keep the body moving and have FUN! Fun – this is the key theme in our cancer survivor class. Students have shared the loving community they have found with Nia, acceptance, and feeling good to move their body.

Our Nia research study showed greater flexibility and extension for women with breast cancer receiving radiation.  Affected arm and shoulder mobility have been a reported concern for women several years after treatment.   Nia can and is being used by all people, all ages, all fitness levels – it is for Every Body!
