Methods For Using Your Essential Oils

I recently co-authored an article with Tisha Jones entitled, Safe Essential Oil Practice in Cancer Centers. Although it was targeted for cancer the centers, the tips and guidelines can be used in any setting including your home or practice.

As interest grows with using essential oils, safety must be considered especially with the method of use for your oils.  Generally, there are three methods to using your essential oils:

Inhalation – this is the easiest and quickest way to access the benefits of essential oils.  Inhalation allows the oil molecules to enter into your brain and eventually your entire system.  In my hospital setting, we use a tissue – place a drop of your favorite essential oil on the tissue and inhale as needed.  Diffusion is a way to get an aroma into your space.  Use of an inhaler is a wonderful way to use oils for conditions or for relaxation.  I have more details on diffusion and creating an inhaler in previous videos on the Elite Experts Network.

Topical Method – is usually skin application.  It is suggested to begin with 2-5 drops of your essential oil and place into a tsp of a carrier such as olive oil or coconut oil.  Place a few drops of this mixture on the area of concern.  If you have sensitive skin or are new to using essential oils, then consider placing the mixture on the Soles of the feet.  This is the safest location when you are not sure of skin type or reactions.  The skin is tougher yet still allows for absorption into your entire system.

Oral or ingestion Method – should be done with guidance by a clinical aromatherapist.  The essential oil needs to be food grade quality.  The company I use has a separate line called Vitality Oils which can be used as a dietary supplement.
