Vitality Oils

Many people wish to use essential oils in their food or as a dietary supplement.  But essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts, with a single drop containing the equivalent constituents of several plants. So while the benefits of essential oils are valuable, it is also critical to remember that too much of a good thing is a bad thing.  That is why you need to read the directions on the label.  They give safety and the benefit of the oil, while minimizing any potential reactions.

So, what guidelines should you consider?  You want to make sure you have genuine essential oils safe for human consumption.  The label should state that it is safe for internal use. In addition, directions should be provided on how to use them as a dietary supplement.  Young Living uses a special label called Vitality which gives you a quick check that it will be safe for internal use.

These are some examples:

Peppermint Vitality Oil – gives a minty refreshing aroma as a supplement and can assist normal digestion.  Love it in brownies for chocolate mint taste.  Yum!

Lemon Vitality Oil – gives a clean and uplifting quality with antioxidant benefits.  I like adding a drop or 2 in my water or smoothie.

Lavender Vitality Oil  – has a floral and relaxing scent.  Add a drop to your hot tea to soothe and calm your emotions and spirit.

Some quick tips for using essential oils in food and beverages –

  1. When cooking with fatty base foods such as cheese or thick tomato sauces, you may wish to add more drops of essential oil. Begin with 2-3 drops at the end of your cooking time.  Add more if you wish a stronger flavor.
  2. When adding essential oils to a liquid base, begin with fewer drops such as 1-2 drops and use an emulsifier. For example, I like honey; I dip a spoon in the honey, place a drop of my oil on the honey, mix it together and stir in my hot water so it dissolves.  Add ice if you wish a cooler drink.

We will be having a class on Cooking with Essential Oils this month and details are on this website.  If you are not in the area and wish the recipes, contact me.   Thank you!
