Don’t Let Wearing a Mask Affect Your Skin

Each year you hope to become a better version of yourself, smarter, healthier, younger looking.  But the demands of your busy world make it hard to carve out time for yourself. Then, coronavirus further complicates your schedule!

Each season brings environmental changes that we can’t escape.  However now, wearing a mask can even cause changes in your skin.  What can we do about the negative effects of wearing a mask and slow down signs of aging?  In addition, our lifestyle, diet and stress level all play a significant roles in the appearance of our skin.  Here are some tips to beat the harsh effects of our new environment:

  1. Use a moisture rich cleanser twice a day to limit skin irritation that may be caused from wearing a mask. Choosing lukewarm water vs. hot will help to avoid stripping natural oils away from your skin. Rinse with cool water as it helps close your pores.
  2. Exfoliate your skin regularly. This helps deep clean your pores revealing the new fresh skin cells.  Moisturizer can’t do its job with too many dead skin cells.  It’s like trying to water a dead plant.  No matter how much water we give it, it’s not coming back to life.  In order for the moisturizer to work, you must exfoliate.
  3. Apply a moisturizer specific for your skin type. Remember more is not always better.
  4. Protect your skin. Before we reach for our masks and gloves, you’ll want to protect your skin. Use day cream and/or foundation with sunscreen. My new favorite to use while wearing a mask is MK CC Cream!  It stays on my face and not so much on my mask!
  5. Hydrate from the inside out with plenty of water. Find a routine that works for you. It may be having a water bottle accessible all day. Drinking enough water was hard for me.  I’m not a sipper or don’t typically carry a water bottle around.  I changed my routine by starting my day with a full glass of water before my coffee. Another at lunch and two more throughout the evening.  I also started drinking water with a high PH level which allows faster absorption and eliminates a bloated feeling.

Whatever brand you choose, (cleanser, mask, exfoliator, moisturizers, or supplements) it’s best that they are from the same line.  When you choose from the same product line, you can rest assured that you are less likely to have a reaction since manufacturers design their products to work together.
