Struggling with Life

Do you ever find yourself struggling with life? Do you have an important project that you can’t seem to get done? Do you become distracted or get side-tracked instead of completing things the way you want to? I believe this happens to many of us at one time or another. So, I developed three recommendations to consider when you find yourself struggling with life.

Many of my coaching clients have come to me for help in this area that I call “struggling with life”. As we begin working together, I first ask them to tell me about all the projects they are involved in. For many, the list is very long. Clients will often pride themselves on their ability to do several things at once, saying, “I am a great multi-tasker”.

This brings up my first recommendation: Stop trying to do several things at once and focus. Multi-tasking is actually Task-Switching since the brain can focus on only one thing at a time. You’re actually slowing yourself down! So, clear the decks and create a space where you can focus on what’s truly important to you. Trying to get several things accomplished at once with divided attention is struggling! Do one thing at a time.

Sometimes, a client will say, “I am just going to work all night and all day tomorrow, until I “git ‘er done”!

This brings up my second recommendation: Resist the temptation to “gun it”. Working all night and for long periods of time only invites error-thinking and mistakes because of fatigue. Going 110-120% may sound great, but you are actually leaking energy. You’re depleting your energy capacity quicker than you can renew it, which leads to burn-out! You just can’t maintain that kind of a pace for very long before your capacity to complete the project is used up needlessly.

A final and very important recommendation for those clients who continue to struggle with life is probably the most important of the 3 listed here: Give 100% of your attention to your current project or task. Focus on one thing at a time. When we go after a goal 100%, we get into the Flow. Athletes call it The Zone, where the energy is streamlined with high creativity. Distractions are a thing of the past; your focus is clear, your energy is directed to your goal and time flies by rapidly as you stop struggling and experience true joy. You’ll recognize this experience because it’s like being carried easily along in a delightful water current of peak performance.

Use these three ways to stop struggling with life and if you discover you need a little assistance to do this, email me, I’d be happy to help.
