Pain Relief – Essential Oils as a Rescue Remedy

Recently, there has been a lot in the media about how the opioid crisis has escalated. Additional concern has been in the treatment of pain management and when to use narcotics. Healthcare providers are being asked to use other methods besides or in combination with narcotics for pain control. One supportive therapy showing great promise for pain management are essential oils.

Methods of use include deep inhalation from a tissue, inhalers, and dilution of the oil for topical application. Let’s review some of these essential oils and why they are so helpful for pain relief.

Frankincense (Boswellia carterii) contains alpha pinene, a chemical constituent that may reduce inflammation and can be effective for nerve pain like sciatica. Place a drop on a tissue and inhale deeply. Consider using 1-2 drops in an ounce of coconut oil. Take a drop of two of the mixture and gently massage down the painful nerve path.

Peppermint (Mentha piperita) contains menthol which has a cooling effect on the body. This is one of my favorites! I dilute as described and massage over sore muscles especially my neck and shoulders. It provides an icy hot sensation easing the discomfort. Caution using with children under age 5.

Orange (Citrus sinesis) may provide a soothing and comfort sensation to the mind and body. Several research studies support Orange oil providing relaxation for children who may undergo procedures both medical and dental. Diffuse or inhale for relaxation.

These essential oils are NOT the magic bullet for pain relief but they can be helpful in combination with diet, exercise, relaxation methods, and traditional therapies. If you are using for your own pain relief plan, check for oil quality, safety, and how to use with any medications. If you are considering using aromatherapy in an organization, then obtain a consult and review the resources for policies on aromatherapy and pain management.
