Maintaining Productivity And Focus In a Changing Workplace

Although there are plenty of businesses that can successfully implement work-from-home policies, many kinds of businesses, including manufacturers, retail workers, and healthcare workers don’t have this luxury.

At the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, many businesses had to shut down or furlough their employees due to government restrictions or a slowdown in orders, while others couldn’t keep up with the demand for their essential supplies. Supply chains were disrupted because of these closures and travel restrictions and new challenges arose that needed business leaders’ immediate attention. These issues included worker absences, restricted site access, mental and physical fatigue, and adapting to new working methods.

For businesses that want to be successful in a post-COVID world. Here are three strategies:

Protect your people. Even as vaccines are becoming more available, we are not at the point of “herd immunity” yet. Not only do you want to keep your employees physically safe, you also want them to feel safe and know that you are doing everything possible to protect them and their families. Take a look at your operating procedures, hygiene measures, physical distancing parameters, processes, and provide tools needed to help keep workers safe.

Communicate early and often. It is vitally important that your communication includes sharing information about how your company protects both the employees, your customers, and your organization. Strive to keep your messages positive and focused on best-practices rather than trying to address misinformation. Be available to answer employee questions in a variety of modes – email, text, video, phone, etc.

Prepare for the future. The past year has meant lots of changes to the work environment – many of which are here to stay. Start to think through the post-pandemic implications for your business. Strategies may include incorporating a more flexible schedule, a digitally-enabled workplace, rethinking your supply chains, offering more digital channels and e-commerce platforms.

The business landscape is changing. As you look for ways to partner with your employees, vendors, and customers, you will retain your talent, maximize your relationships, and increase your productivity.
