Laughter, Learning and Horses

“I am thankful for laughter, except when milk comes out of my nose.-Woody Allen

I was recently reminded how very important laughter is when learning something new or under a lot of stress. It really can be the best medicine!

One of my favorite things to do now is ride my horse on wooded trails with my friends.  But, when I bought my first horse, and started riding as an adult I found out I had a LOT to learn.  His name is Charger and I was so excited!

My first experience with a riding instructor left me in tears thinking I had made a huge mistake. I began to think that I should just sell Charger and forget about the dream I’d had since I was a little girl.

Determined to keep him, I signed up for lessons with a different instructor.  Given my previous experience, I was really nervous, but willing to try again.  As it turns out, this instructor was different…special.

What made her different?  Why did I absorb more from her than the previous instructor?  Because she was funnier than all get out! She told hysterical stories about her first riding experiences that helped me relax.  She made me laugh at myself and Charger like I never had before. The moment I began laughing at myself I gained the observational distance needed to learn.

So, here’s my QUICK TIP for today:  Don’t hesitate to laugh at yourself.  Even a little chuckle can help.  Sometimes we over-achievers take things way too seriously.  A little laughter can go a long way.

2021 Update – Last August I lost Charger.  We had been together almost 20 years.  During that time he taught me a tremendous amount about myself.  Like almost all horses Charger acted as a mirror.  I always knew immediately if I was distracted and unsure of myself, or focused and confident when around him.

All our animals hold a special place in our hearts, but there is something about horses that can literally change your life.  He definitely changed mine.  Because of my deep connection with Charger, last year I added a certification and new trainings to my business, “Experiential Learning with Horses”.  In them my horses and I show professionals how to be exceptional leaders, team members and just all-round better people.

If you are interested in learning more about these very special trainings go to “Upcoming Events” on my website and/or washburnendeavours.com/horses.
