A Goal is Only As Good As It’s Plan

It’s that time of year again – the time when we resolve to do something meaningful to our success. Statistics say that resolution will last about 2 weeks! And then what? Let’s explore how to create a plan for achieving that goal.

How many times have you made a decision to do something in your business? You strategize, do visioning exercises, goal set. And then reality hits, life takes over and before you know it, time has passed with no, or little progress.

Most people are great at setting goals but lousy at meeting them. That’s because they fail to plan a strategy to accomplish that goal. They don’t include others in the process and they don’t monitor their progress. That’s why before they know it, they’ve failed.

Let’s change the outcome!

Once you’ve chosen a goal you, follow these steps:

  1. Embrace the impact
  2. Identify the players
  3. Set first steps
  4. Monitor progress

Number 1 –  embrace the impact
What will it mean for you to achieve the goal? What will success mean to your business? Really feeling the impact the met goal will have is powerful. It can make your commitment to the goal stronger. And it gives you a story to tell others.

Which leads to number 2 – identify the players.
Who can help you achieve your goal? What do you need them to do? They might be an active participant – like a staff member. Or they might be a support person like a spouse. Decide what you need from others, tell them the story as well as how they play a role.

Other people are happy to help or support you when they know the backstory.

Number 3 –  set first steps

It’s hard to lay out a long process because you don’t know what might happen as a result of steps you take. One of the most valuable things you can do is decide on the first 3 steps. They will be small, simple, and doable. Those steps will lead you to the next appropriate steps to take.

A key element here is to put those steps on the calendar. Make them appointments – things you commit to doing. That’s how they are realized.

And lastly, number 4 – monitor your progress

Don’t wait until the date you set for the goal to be completed. Monitor your progress along the way. Make sure you are heading in the right direction. This way, if something isn’t going right you can adjust in real time.

Go ahead! Give it a try. I think you’ll find following these 4 steps will make a huge difference in achieving your goals. And if you find you could use some assistance, reach out to me at diane@seizethisday.co. I’m happy to help! As always, remember to seize THIS day.
