PAT ALTVATER Entrepreneurs That Take Responsibility Soar to Success Elite Experts Network AFP Marketing PatAltvater.com When we make a decision to change and begin to implement new strategies to move in the direction, we want to go…for example, launch a new product or even just create and implement a new prospecting plan… invariably along the way, things happen. Someone implies it can’t be done because they believe it won’t work, or the first three people we approach say “NO”, and suddenly our motivation disappears when it’s time to take the next action. Then what happens? Most people STOP right in their tracks and take on a type of victim mentality. They give up their power. I call this coming face to face with the brick wall. It’s the point of choice. We can recognize this moment by our behaviors and emotions. For example, if we can’t bring ourselves to take actions that we intellectually know will move us forward, we can look within ourselves to identify, first, the emotion we are feeling, such as frustration, disappointment, insecurity, or others, and second, the belief behind it. For most people it’s some type of fear… fear of failure, rejection or even success. Once you begin to see the nature of your fear, it will lose its hold on you and you can activate your power of choice, to take responsibility for your life and move through the fear and into action. That sounds so simple, right? It’s not always simple but with the help of a coach, Mastermind group or other support system, we can begin to feel our feelings and soar to success. Ed Rigsbee Helps Speakers Soar to Success
SOAR TO SUCCESS / Feature Article Ed Rigsbee has been a professional speaker for over 30 years. He learned early that he had to find the right decision maker and then sell himself to the associations that were looking for a speaker for their meeting. He now helps other speakers find their ideal clients and book speaking engagements. He is involved in a variety of associations and has learned himself by doing and being involved. “I got into association management about 20 years agowhenwe started the Cigar PEG charity, which is connected to the National Speakers Association. Because I am the executive director, I have become involved in the American Society of Association Executives.” One day every week he hosts a Zoom call with Association and Society CEOs, which allows them a place to talk about issues they are facing in their organizations. He also hosts a zoom call for speakers that helps them sell their services to associations that may need a keynote address, or speaker for their meeting, or convention. If that isn’t enough as the Chief Executive of the Cigar PEG Philanthropy through Fun Charity he oversees fund raising efforts and event coordination. “Today, I’m running an association CEO group, a speaker’s group that wants to sell to associations and the Cigar PEG group all via Zoom calls.” A big part of his life over the past 23 years has been the Cigar PEG Charity which he cofounded with Grant Doyle in 1999. The first Cigar PEG party was held during the National Speakers Association (NSA) convention in San Antonio. They raised $900.00 that was donated to NSA Foundation and earmarked for the Professional Speaker Benefit Fund. Charitable events and auctions conducted by the group has continued to generate funds.
As of April, 2022 the Cigar PEG has donated a total of $736,400. Of that total, $395,000 has been given to the NSA Foundation with the balance distributed to a variety of worthy charities including, the Hereditary Disease Foundation, theCardiacArrhythmias Research & Education Foundation, the American Cancer Society and CurePSP. Ed’s book, The ROI of Membership, Today’s Missing Link for Explosive Growth, helps membership organizations learn how to accelerate membership growth, among other things. Today Ed keeps busy with efforts to educate speakers to become better businessmen and women. He has combined materials from his “Selling to Associations” website along with other previously prepared training programs to create a place for speakers called the Association & Society Speakers Community (ASSC). “These materials help speakers find more engagements. They outline how to do interviews with association decision makers, the people that do the hiring. We have workshops and weekly zoom calls. My goal is to show speakers where and how to go get business.” There are over 100,000 associations and societies, in the United States, that book speakers every year. Ed has received several successes stories from students.
SOAR TO SUCCESS / Feature Article “One lady was so happy that she followed our process and reached out to a banker’s association and got booked as a speaker for one of their women’s meetings. I told her that was great, but don’t stop there. We explored what other meetings that association conducted that would need speakers.” Ed has found that like every other business each person has to dig deeper into a specific industry. The shotgun approach rarely works. Focus on one or two industries and drill down to the specifics. Ed’s tips for budding speakers to be more successful include being specific in what areas you want to work and then drill down on the important associations and societies in a general area of the country that you can research to discover the types of meetings they hold and contact information. Another way Ed has gained speaking engagements is to create an informative Article Bank.
Keep it updated and add not only personally written content, but content that is permitted to be shared by other writers. “Once a prospective client called me and told me that they had read an article I had written on partnering, in Kitchen & Bath Magazine. I had never written an article for that publication, but I had posted the piece to my website and granted blanket permission to reuse the article. Kitchen & Bath had reprinted it and the client had seen it when googling the subject. He hired me to speak to the Association’s Board of Directors on the topic.” Ed feels that he is in a great spot in his life. COVID definitely changed the way he runs his business, but he still enjoys spending time with his NSA pals over cigars and adult beverages.
SOAR TO SUCCESS / Feature Article 3 Keys to Soar to Success When Soar to Success asked Ed Rigsbee what three personality traits he found in most successful people, he said: “Successful people DO, and don’t talk about it. They are persistent and care about people. If you do those things, success and the money will follow.” 2 1 3 They are Methodical “You can’t just burn bright like a super nova for a few seconds and go dim. One shining moment doesn’t make you a success, you’re just a one hit wonder. You have to motor on. Each little success builds to the next one and so on.” Be Persistent “A friend told me once, when I was struggling, just keep showing up. You don’t have to be the best marketer, or the best speaker, but you have to be the best at persistence.” Really like people “I like all kinds of people. I don’t care what their politics, gender, or religion are. As long as you are a cool person and not a jerk, you will do ok.” He enjoys his business and finds it fun still today. “I’ve evolved to a really cool place, or maybe I’m just really boring. A lot of the things that I do in my business is fun. I like these kinds of interviews and running the Society and Association Speaker community, as well as, the Cigar PEG.” Ed Rigsbee has spent his career speaking to various visit his website: https:// speakercommunity.org/ or email him at: edrigsbee@ gmail.com If you would like to learn more about the charitable work of Cigar PEG visit the website: https://cigarpeg.com/ groups and conventions. Landing a large client can sound like a great goal. After all, the boost this can bring to a company’s reputation is worth more than any marketing effort. This could be why so many small businesses focus on gaining that one big client. Some small businesses get their start by working with one large customer. This usually happens when an employee is let go or decides to venture off on their own. They work with the company leadership to shift the employee position to an outsource vendor relationship. This can seem like a win/win situation. However, it puts the vendor in a precarious position. No company should concentrate more than 20% of their revenue on just one client. Themost obvious reason is sustainability. Themore you rely on one client for your revenue, the less stable your company. Imagine if that customer went away. How would that loss of revenue impact your company? Diversify Your Client Base By Diane Helbig
SOAR TO SUCCESS / Business Acceleration Strategies Consider all of the resources you have to put toward a large client. Large clients typically consume a great deal of attention and energy from your staff. They may have a dedicated representative who is assigned to the account. The bigger the client, the more product you are selling or services you are providing. That takes manpower and logistics. Often times, the needs of the large clients overshadow the needs of the other clients. In addition, it is typical for a large client to bring in little to no profit. This is because larger customers can demand lower prices. Gaining the client simply for the reputation builder can work against you. You may find you don’t have time or bandwidth to add other customers to your base. Moreover, the higher l evel of resources devoted to a large client usually equals higher costs associated with that account. If the price point is low, but the cost is high, it is actually detrimental to your business to engage a large client. On the flip side, when you diversify your client base the impact is positive. Your profit margins will be higher. The amount of time and resources needed for each customer will be more evenly divided. The risk if a customer leaves is greatly diminished. Youwill gainabetter reputationwhen people see that a good number of companies want to do business with your company. Take the energy youwould like to invest in gaining a big, known, client and spend it on building a solid foundation of client variety. There truly is strength in numbers. You will have a healthier, more profitable business. ©2022 Helbig Enterprises
Management Conversation Strategies Strengthen Engagement By Lisa Ryan Did you know that only 47% of employees report that they received feedback from their manager in the past year? Even worse, only 26% of those employees strongly agree that the comments they received helped them do their job better. Regular communication and feedback are critical elements of a highly engaged workforce. However, there are many managers who are not comfortable with or skilled at having the types of conversations that bring out the best in their people. When employees don’t feel heard by their managers, they are less likely to give their full efforts to their job. Although some employees may feel that no news is good news, it’s easy for people to feel to
directionless and unmotivated without regular feedback. A recent study found that 65% of workers would like more feedback than they are currently getting, even if the feedback is challenging. Here are three types of conversations that leaders can have with their people to strengthen their engagement levels on the job. Career pathing: Spend the time to find out your employees’ career goals, professional development plans, and expectations for their future growth with the company. By getting a clear picture of what your employees want, you’ll be in a better position to chart the course for them to achieve it. Checking in: Regularly touch base with your employees to see how things are going. What SOAR TO SUCCESS / Business Acceleration Strategies resources do they need? What successes have they had? What is holding them back? When you take the time to check in with your team, and act on their ideas, they are more likely to be committed to your organization. Progress reviews: During this more formal review process, managers can assess performance and reset expectations. However, because the managers have been engaging in the other two types of conversations, the progress review focuses on development and growth opportunities as well as employee strengths. When leaders have meaningful conversations with their employees on a regular basis, they bring out the very best in their people. Use all three of the conversations with your team for the best results.
Another day, anothermeetingonmy schedule! How much time do we waste in meetings each week? I don’t even want to think about it. Let’s take a look at a newway of runningmeetings that is actually effective and productive! Jack Stackwrote a fabulous book called The Great Game of Business. In that book, he introduces us to something called The Great Huddle. By Megan Patton The Great Huddle: A Meaningful Meeting What is a “Great Huddle?” It’s a staff meeting! But it’s not your normal, run of the mill type of staff meeting. Instead, it’s a meaningful meeting where your team will realign themselves to your vision, mission, and values. In the meeting, each staff member has an opportunity to speak so that everyone gets to know each other on a deeper level, knowing
SOAR TO SUCCESS / Business Acceleration Strategies what everyone is working on, and what their own priorities are. Followingthe initial round-robin, youoramember of your executive team will give a leadership briefing which includes the specific things you and your teamare working on and the reasons behind it. You’ll share critical financial numbers with your team so that everyone is more in tune with the state of your company (for better or for worse). And you’ll give an update on where your company stands relative to your goals. Next, someone will give a brief “lesson in leadership” or will provide refresher “standard operating procedure” training to your team. And finally, you’ll cap off thismeetingwith some public recognition to highlight superior achievement fromwithin your ranks. With a meeting structure like The Great Huddle, meetings are more meaningful, convey more useful information, and bring people together ensuring each person is aligned with the company’s vision and goals. Engagement soars as people feel much more connected to each other and to the company. Try it. If you’d like help structuring a meeting using this approach, please shoot me a message at mpatton@ odastrategy.com. I’d love to help your team implement some Great Huddles! The Great Huddle is a meaningful meeting where your team will realign themselves to your vision, mission, and values
10 Steps to Recession Proof Your Business By Mark Allen Roberts We are experiencing both prosperity and uncertainty. With rising costs and stock market fluctuations, is your business prepared for a business slowdown and/or recession? II you and your team ask:” how we can recession-proof our company?”, this article is for you. Meeting with CEOs, CFOs, and Sales leaders, the “R” word keeps coming up lately: Recession. I recently read a study that shared that 68% of CEOs believe a recession is likely, but very few teams have a plan in pace should it occur. What is a recession? I’m not an economist, but my understanding is that it is a strong drop in GDP for two quarters, coupled with increases in unemployment, and consumers and businesses curtailing large purchase spending. Since World War II, we have experienced 12 recessions lasting 8-18 months, and the average was 11 months. Is your business prepared should you experience an 11–18-month slowdown in revenues? In a Harvard study of past recessions, 75% of businesses with $50 million or more in sales realized declining revenues while 14% of companies realized accelerated growth. Here’s what the teams that realized accelerated growth did during times of economic slowdowns and recession.
SOAR TO SUCCESS / Business Acceleration Strategies 10 Steps to Recession Proof Your Business 1. Focus on customer relationships and improve customer satisfaction and customer experience to ensure customer retention. 2. Assess and review your business plan every 30 days and adjust as needed 3. Build cash reserves 4. Buydown expensive and variable debt 5. Avoid Panic! Check your emotions at the door and make decisions based on data 6. Assess your sales team- do they have the selling skills needed when sales get tougher to close? Do you have 20% of your sales team that are not delivering a return on investment because they should not be in a sales role- restructure and upskill 7. Build your access to credit now before you need it 8. Market strategically and refine your messaging so it resonates with your ideal customers and buyer personas 9. Create an internal cross-function team of leaders that become the nerve center, and they are empowered to weather the storm, they have a plan based on various trigger events should they occur 10. Invest in training and coaching to help your sales team improve their sales skills should business slow down and sales are more difficult In 2008 my team saw a significant revenue decrease when the market dropped. We implemented the above steps, and our sales and profits grew stronger than pre-recession averages, and yours can too. If you need help determining if your team has the right skills to sell in a down economy or want to conduct voice of customer research to understand your current customer satisfaction and how to improve your customer experience, please contact me.
“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go with other people.” This African Proverb speaks volumes about how successful people operate. If you have a dream of building your investment portfolio become the master of gaining buy in. Buy in means that you can paint strong visions of your aspirations and communicate in such a compelling way that others “want to become part of your dream.” How do you become a master at gaining buy-in? As the visionary you hold the key to the vision however you realize that to achieve this big dream you need the hands and feet of others. You have a clear image of the result you want to achieve. It is a vivid picture of the real results of real efforts. It comes from the future and informs and energizes the present. It creates the energy and will to make change happen. Master Buy-in To Achieve Investor Success By Karen Cupp
SOAR TO SUCCESS / Business Acceleration Strategies Focus first on those with the most influence. How can you identify these individuals? They hold court after your meeting. People look at them during the meeting to see how they are responding. They are the ones in your community whose opinions people seek out. Oftentimes getting one of these influencers to buy-in will cause others to automatically follow. Craft your vision carefully and practice communicating it. It should connect with and inspire all stakeholders, including yourself. Influencing is a transference of emotion. You cannot convey emotion if it is not within you to convey. Make sure you have bought in yourself and can communicate it with conviction. Keep it simple with storytelling. This a highly effective strategy for communicating your vision for change. Communicate your vision through multiple channels. Repetition empowers familiarity and helps others to begin to adopt the vision as their own. People who take the vision as their own will enthusiastically put in the hours and the focus because they believe in you and your objectives and truly want to see your idea come to life. Build up your trust account. When you make a commitment you create hope, when you deliver on that commitment you create trust. Always deliver. Do not find excuses, find a way. Remember, people often hear what they want to hear. Make sure your expectations are set properly and there is complete understanding. Authenticity and credibility are currency for a leader. Leverage momentum. Momentum is magic. Without momentum, the smallest obstacles can derail you. With momentum, the largest obstacles cannot fail you. Find opportunities to generate small wins. Get the team believing by achieving. There is nothing more exciting than when others begin to move your dream forward. Great leaders lean in with confidence because they know that their dreamwill come true and bless everyone in its path.

Get Off the Couch By Jack Klemeyer With all the news, almost all of which is negative or purposefully designed to get you upset, keep you distracted and make you feel anxious, it’s no wonder so many people are hitting the couch to escape. My advice, get off the couch! If you’re dealing with anxiety or uneasy feelings here are some ideas and concepts to help you move forward. Create a positive social circle. The more people you have in your life to support you, the better off you’ll be when you are feeling down. In addition, having people who expect you to do things with them prevents you from staying home, laying on the couch and wallowing. Surround yourself with positive people and work hard to avoid those who frustrate you. We cannot control every interaction we have, but
SOAR TO SUCCESS / Personal Growth Strategies we can control who we willingly spend our time with. Remember the Earl Nightingale quote: “You become the average of the five people you hang aroundwith.”Avoidpeoplewhodrainyour energy and your mood and stick to true-blue friends who are satisfying to be around. When suffering from being down and anxious, many times it pays to forgive people who have done you wrong. Holding on to grudges and feeling hatred toward people can make you feel worse. Letting go of these negative feelings can help you learn how to feel more positive both toward yourself and toward others. Treat yourself with compassion. Give yourself grace. Have you ever seen someone yell at themselves when they make a mistake? Have you ever thrown a golf club after a bad swing? Being so hard on yourself can push you deeper down the anxiety spiral. Treat yourself with love and compassion, like you would treat a friend or a small child. Remind yourself that everyonemakes mistakes, and remember, that we all learn more from our failures than we do from our successes. In view of the increasing negative events happening around the world here are five things you can do to help you stay positive. 1. Take a news sabbatical. Listening to the news can be downright depressing. All bad news all of the time can drag you down and keep you there. Give yourself permission to stop listening to the news, especially before bedtime. 2. Use your influence to do good where you live. Shift your focus from what is happening in other parts of the world to your community. Get involved in making a positive change or contribution. 3. Focus on what is working in your life. Choose one thing that you are grateful for and focus on it for the rest of the day. 4. Express your appreciation toothers. You can create a positive world one person at a time by saying thank you every chance you get to everyone you interact with – from the person who holds open a door for you, to your child who does a chore, to a cherished friend or loved one. 5. Focus on what you can change, let go of what you can’t change. When faced with a distressing situation ask yourself if you can control over the events. If you do, change what you can. If you don’t, learn to let it go and move on. You have much more control over how you feel than you might realize. Get off the couch and connect with other positive people in your community and make the commitment to be the kind of person that brightens the roomwhen you walk in versus the person who makes the room brighter by leaving. You have much more control over how you feel than you might realize.
Relax. Really?! It’s Summer! Take some time off already! By Melanie Rembrandt “Relax!” When you hear this, do you shrug and think, “No. I have a business to run. I’ll relax later.” Well, as difficult as it may be, relaxation is an important part of business success. There have been numerous reports on how the brain functions differently during rest and why this process improves thinking, mental health and functioning. For example, check out: Mary Helen Immordino-Yang, Joanna A. Christodoulou and Vanessa Singh (2013), “Rest Is Not Idleness: Implications of the Brain’s Default Mode for Human Development and Education,” Perspectives on Psychological Science. Kaori Satoa, Sachiko Kurodab and Hideo Owan (Volume 246, February 2020, 112774) “Mental health effects of long work hours, night and weekend work, and short rest periods,” Social Science &Medicine. So how do you fit “rest” into your schedule? Relax Your Way. What helps you relax? Whether it’s meditating, working out at the gym, talking to friends, or something else, schedule relaxation time that works for you, and give yourself a break! Eat and Drink In a HealthyWay. If you consume caffeinated beverages and a lot of sugary snacks regularly, it’s going to be more difficult to let your mind rest.
SOAR TO SUCCESS / Personal Growth Strategies When you schedule down time, think about what you are putting in your body beforehand. List What’s Necessary. Got zero time for yourself? Make a list of all of the activities you do that someone else can do for you. Hire an intern, freelancer, or part/full-time employee to free up your schedule. Yes, it may cost extra time and money, but it’s well worth it. Ask for Help. Feeling overwhelmed? Form a supportive network of associates, friends and family members who can provide positive insights and guide you along the way… so you can grow your business AND get the rest you need. X-RayWhat’s Going On. (Ha! Bet you didn’t think I could come up with an “X” word!) Just like you x-ray a body part to see what’s going on beneath the skin’s surface, stop and take a good look at what’s really going on with your business. Do you spend time on the things that actually matter? What’s necessary to get to the next step? Do you need help? Review and take action to make positive changes happen. Take That Time Off! I used to grimace when someone told me to “Relax!” But I’ve changed my ways. Now, I schedule relaxation time so I can recharge and think of new ideas to be more successful. Plus, I’ve created some wonderful memories with family and friends in the process. How about you? Are you going to take some time off this summer? If not, you may look back just a few years from now, be in the same place with your business and see all of the fun you’ve missed!
Are You Feeling Empathy Fatigue? By Pat Bennett The culmination of the 24-hour news cycle filled with the global pandemic, politics, human tragedies, food and product shortages, natural disasters and a teetering economy has some of us experiencing empathy fatigue. At its worst, empathy fatigue is the inability of a person to care and becoming numb to horrific events. It’s the negative consequence of repeated exposure to stressful or traumatic events and can be manifested both emotionally and/or physically. Mark Stebnicki, a professor in the Department ofAddictionsandRehabilitationatEastCarolina University who has been researching, writing about and presenting on empathy fatigue
SOAR TO SUCCESS / Personal Growth Strategies for more than two decades, coined the term empathy fatigue. And like compassion fatigue, which is a term commonly associated with healthcare workers, empathy fatigue is now experienced by parents, teachers and grocery store workers who are all feeling the negative effects of repeated stress, constant change and exposure to fear and loss. The sooner you notice signs of empathy fatigue, the sooner you can care for yourself and replenish your stores of empathy. Be on the lookout for: • Feeling exhausted physically and psychologically • Feeling helpless, hopeless or powerless • Feeling irritable, angry, sad or numb • A sense of being detached or having decreased pleasure in activities • Ruminating about the suffering of others and feeling anger towards the events or people causing the suffering • Blaming yourself and having thoughts of not having done enough to help the people who are suffering • A decreased sense of personal and professional accomplishment • A change in your worldview or spirituality • Physical symptoms, including sleep and appetite disturbances, nausea and dizziness “What many people don’t realize is that our ability to relate to and care for others (aka our empathy) is a limited resource,” states psychologist Susan Albers, PsyD of the Cleveland Clinic. “If we drain our empathy account, we can end up feeling some pretty negative emotions which can result in trauma.” “Unless we have support and methods to address these wounds, a majority will choose numbness”—almost always unconsciously— because the alternative is too painful, writes Michaela Hass, PhD, author of Bouncing Forward: The Art and Science of Cultivating Resilience. I personally subscribe to a practice which flight attendants do by putting my own oxygen mask on before helping others. You simply can’t pour from an empty cup! For me, good self-care means developing a routine that makes each day somewhat predictable and includes the intention of getting adequate sleep, eating well, drinking copious amount of water, engaging in physical activity, taking time to relax and socializing with family and friends who lift me up. And I’ve chosen not to obsess about bad news or situations I cannot personally control. It’s been a gamechanger. Managing my exposure to the state of the world on social media, television and the like is an ongoing challenge, however, necessary to keep my mind and body balanced. I highly recommend this strategy to be at your optimum best.

Which Marketing Approach Is Best for Your Business? By Holly Kile If you’re planning to start a business, all the best! But remember, there’s a long and difficult road ahead and it takes a lot of muscle to build a sustainable company. Having said that, if you start with the right foundation, your venture will be rewarding. And if you’ve already launched your business but you don’t have a concrete marketing plan, you’re behind. To be as successful as possible, you need to find the right marketing approach in the early stages so that you start on the right track. Don’t be alarmed to hear this. It’s not too late to find the right marketing plan for your business. You just need to make sure you spend enough time to come up with the best possible marketing approach. Here are four ways to boost your visibility and bring more customers your way. 1. Know Your Target Audience Before you do anything else, decide whom you’ll sell your products or services to. This is a crucial step. Don’t skip it and don’t assume your brand is for everyone. Doing this will only set you up for failure. Narrow down your target audience. This will help you create a brand that’s more appealing to
a specific group. However, remember that going too specific can alienate a huge portion of the consumer market. So tread carefully and find a market within the middle ground. 2. Branding —Have a Clear Identity To communicate effectively what your business does and what it stands for, you must have a clear identity. After knowing what your business represents, you’ll need a suitable name, a logo, images, and colors that will all convey this message to your target market. You can design your logo by yourself or you can hire a freelancer to do it for you. And once you have a logo, put it on everything - business cards, advertising, email signatures and so on, to create awareness and visibility. 3. Conduct Market Research Once you identify your ideal audience and come up with a memorable brand, it’s time to come up with a marketing plan. However, before working on your marketing campaign, start by validating your hypothesis. Remember, just because you plan to target a certain audience, it doesn’t mean this group of consumers will automatically like your products or services. So, begin by determining if your target audience wants what you’re planning to offer. One of the primary reasons many companies fail is because there’s no market demand for what they offer. Thus, conducting market research early on is a marketing approach that will help you find out if your venture is worth pursuing. To build a successful business, have a differentiation strategy. Establish what SOAR TO SUCCESS / Core Business Strategies differentiates your company from the competition. Figuring out how your brand compares to other similar products or services already in the market will make it easier to create an effective marketing strategy. 4. Test and Measure All Your Marketing Campaigns Once you start marketing your products or services, you must determine how effective your campaigns are. This will help you calculate your ROI, and you won’t throw your budget down the drain. Use online tools such as Google Analytics to measure various metrics, such as where your traffic is coming from. Measure your conversions and monitor your engagement on social media. Also, look at data from your email marketing campaigns. Look at your open rates, clickthroughs, bounce rates, and unsubscribes. Use your results to make changes and improvements. For example, you can try to see how segmenting your audience will impact your results. By testing and measuring your campaigns, you’ll seewhat’sworking andwhat needs tobe changed or scrapped completely. Don’t Give Up Coming up with the right marketing approach is daunting, and it takes time. There’s no one best marketing approach — experiment to see what works well with your audience and what brings the best results. Tweak it and improve on it and you’ll have a perfect marketing approach and plan that will improve your ROI and generate more sales.
There are many things that constitute a good leader, one fundamental one is Persistence. Persistence is tied toyour personal development and improvement as well as your ability to lead and achieve. Persistence to continue to develop yourself as a leader, persistence to develop knowledge in your field, persistence to deal with the everyday challenges that you will be faced By Janet Kendall White Wh y Persistence and Leadership Go Hand in Hand with. Those challenges may be interpersonal, technical, personal, or business related and they may come from different directions all at once. Persistence and persistence alone often separates the winners from the losers. One great example of persistence that in my opinion has stood the test of time and never gets old is the Dan Jansen story. Watch this 24-minute video; it’s worth your time.
Would you have persisted? If it was worth it, I believe you would have. A great question that a friend once asked me about something I was going after has helped me when I don’t “feel” like persisting. Will you regret it if you don’t achieve or do that? Will you regret it if you go through life just being a mediocre leader? Will you regret it if your team does not achieve its goals and you could have gotten them there? Clearly, Dan Jansen would have regretted not getting that gold! If persistence is so important, how do you develop it? Here are just a few things to consider: • Surround yourself with people who follow through and don’t quit. • Know the reason behind what you are doing, start with why. • Think big, start small. • Rest, rejuvenate, don’t quit. • It’s ok to start again. • Look for alternative solutions to the obstacles. Can you go under, over, or around versus through? • Watchand listentothings thatmotivate you. • Develop a growth mindset. I recently participated in two things that have brought persistence to the top of my mind and caused me to write this. One, I am teaching entrepreneurship and we did a “persistence prowl” where all the participants came up with something that really motivated them related to persistence. The result was some amazing speech clips, a cartoon, TED talks and sports related videos. I thought you would enjoy a few of them. If you only listen to one of these, SOAR TO SUCCESS / Core Business Strategies choose the first one. Youwill gain a nugget from a child you should never forget. I encourage you to seek out other examples on your own or reach out and I will share 10-15 more examples of different kinds. Persistence Prowl Results: The Mindset of a Champion (6:48) Why adversity is a gift - the story of Tom Brady (6:12) Best Motivation From The Greatest Athletes Of All Time - THE G.O.A.T. (6:18) Overcoming obstacles - Steven Claunch (4:22) Rocky Balboa’s Inspirational Speech To His Son (2:25) The other thing I participated in was a cycling challenge for a cause that is important to me. When therewere just a fewdays left I had some miles left to go. One day I rode the last 8miles of the ride in the pouring rain and a thunderstorm, it wasn’t fun. That day more than others, I thought about WHY I was riding, and it is THE thing that kept me going. Those I was riding for sacrificed way more than I was by getting out onmy bike. I would have regretted not finishing what I set out to do. Persistence is so critical to leadership and life and not something to take for granted. It requires nurturing regardless of how much we think we have it. For other examples or to learn more about leadership development and the entrepreneurial mindset please reach out.
