Happy new year 2018

The Baby New Year, 2018, is around the corner!  What is your dream for that new year? What plan will you put in place to turn your dream into a reality? How can you change your thoughts to turn challenges into opportunities and disappointments into fulfillments?

Joseph Campbell, a noted mythologist, said, “Life is a Hero’s Journey”, full of opportunities and challenges, new pursuits and goals.  Campbell also said, “The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are.”

I was reminded of this quote as I watched my oldest granddaughter, Anna, hurl the shotput for a record throw at the State Track Meet during her Senior year in high school.  She was thinking about what she wanted to do when she went to college.  She had decided she wanted to go to a smaller school with a great reputation for their pre-med courses and wonderful support for female students.  She was thinking and talking about all sorts of possibilities that were open to her for the upcoming 4 years of undergraduate preparation.

Her sister, Kate, a champion girls’ softball pitcher, has had a dream for several years to be a pitcher in the Women’s College World Series, the NCAA Division I Softball Championship for college softball in the United States.  She will realize that dream in the next few years as she is the first Nebraska recruit into the University of Michigan’s softball program. Kate is focused on her goal!

They both know the world is their oyster and anything is possible!

As we get older we may think there are not as many doors that are open to us as we did when we were 17 or 18. We may lose a little bit of that magic.  We may start to listen to the Monkey Mind conversation that asks, “Who do you think you are?” “Don’t you know how old you are?”

Early in life, we may have taken a job we were good at without really liking what we were doing. We accepted more responsibilities and paid the bills.  We may start to think we missed our chance to do something that is truly meaningful to us. But we haven’t.

You can’t change the past, but you can change the rest of your life. You can make that dream come true.  The best is yet to be!

Maria Nemeth puts it this way, “People who are successful do what’s meaningful to them with clarity, focus, ease and grace”.

Remember, anything is possible.

Just be who you are. It’s the privilege of a lifetime!!
